At the summit, religion related facilities such as shrines are dotted along the crater wall. With the start of worship climbing to Mt. Fuji, religious acts at the summit was systemized along with the construction of temples and the contribution of Buddhist statues. Praying to the “rising sun” at the summit and “Ohachimeguri” which one goes around eight summits are still performed today by a lot of mountain climbers.

It is a trail leading to the summit of Mt. Fuji,
which starts from Kitaguchihongu Fuji Sengen-jinja Shrine. Temple lodgings has started to be built by the latter part of the fourteenth century, the arrangements for many people to climb were well-appointed.

It is believed that having worshipped Sengenomikami in Yohaisho as its origin, Torii gate for “Mt. Fuji” was built in 1480 and main building of Sengen-jinja Shrine was completed by middle of the sixteen century.

The discovery of Kunimasu in Lake Saiko has gained nationwide attention. Clear surface of Lake Saiko surrounded by Mt. Misak Mountains, Mt. Ashiwadayama, and Jukai forest is superb. A lot of tourists from foreign countries have visited Lake Shojiko attracted by the beautiful view of Mt. Fuji since the Meiji period. It is also famous for Kodaki Fuji. Lake Motosuko has mysterious ultramarine water. From the north side of the lake, the imposing spectacle of Mt. Fuji which is the picture of 1,000 yen note can be seen.

Oshi,Former Osano Family Residence
History says that it is the first Asama-jinja which was constructed on the northern side of Mt. Fuji after the eruption in the latter part of the ninth century. Sacred trees, Nanahonsugi (large seven cedar trees), are also well-known. Motomiya is at the 2nd station which is the base for Mt. Fuji worship such as Shugendo and pilgrimage and Satomiya is the ubusunagami (tutelary god) in Kawaguchiko area. Oshi is a professional who takes care of Mt.Fuji pilgrims for everything from lodging to meals in summer as well as is engaged in missionary work of Mt. Fuji worships and prayers as the routine duties. Oshi Osano Family Residence is not open to public.

Lake Yamanakako has been loved by literateurs. Diamond Fuji which the setting sun shines at the summit of Mt. Fuji can be seen from Oct to Feb. “Cherry blossoms of Lake Kawaguchiko and Mt. Fuji” is often associable with one of the representative images of Japan. It has been one of the best known scenic views of Mt. Fuji since the ancient times. There are eight spring water lakes of Mt. Fuji subsoil water. Hachidai Ryuo is enshrined at each of eight lakes as a place of pilgrimage associated with Mt. Fuji worship. Pilgrims purified themselves with the water.

Kakugyo Hasegawa found a cave in the northern foot of Mt. Fuji at his mountain pilgrimage in 1617 and enshrined Asama-noookami. In 1673, current Funatsu Lava Tree Mold was found by Fujiko. In 1892, Yoshida Lava Tree Mold was maintained as the new “Otainai”. Konohana Sakuyahimeno Mikoto is worshiped in the cave. It is not open to public.

Aokigahara-Jukai-ForestIn large lava field created by flowing lava at great eruption of Mt. Fuji, there are 100 kinds of plants such as moss, maple tree, and ferns. It is also a treasury of animals including wild birds and deer. Stay only along the Aokigahara Jukai walking trail when strolling.

Diamond-Fuji(Lake-Yamanakako)The mysterious phenomenon can be seen from middle of Oct to February at the lakeside of Yamanakako. When the setting sun is just at the summit of Mt. Fuji, it looks like a shining diamond. It is believed that your wish will come true if the person can see Diamond Fuji.

Narusawa-Hyoketsu-(Ice-Cave)They are designated as the natural treasures. The air hole was created after lava has flowed, and the wall is covered by ice. Groundwater of Mt. Fuji leaked from the ceiling during winter creates natural icicles and ice pond.

Saiko-Bat-Cave-(Lava-Cave)It is the lava cave with the total length of longer than 350 meters, and the cave wall maintains its original state since the lava stalactite surface was developed. The cave is known for a hibernaculum for bats since it is warm even in winter and does not freeze unlike many of the other caves.

Omuro-Sengen-ShrineIt is located in Shimoyoshida district. Since the ancient times, people have prayed the safety of people living in the area. At Yabusame Festival held every September, fortunes of the coming year are determined by horseshoe prints. In Koshogatsu (small New Year), there is also a festival called Tsutsugayu Festival which tells the number of Mt. Fuji climbers who will visit Mt. Fuji.

Kaiunzan-Jutoku-ji-TempleIt is the only temple of the Rinzai sect in Yamanakako area. It is deeply associated with the Takeda family and was a place where the Takeda family prayed for a victory. There is the grave of Tamaki Miura who was highly renowned throughout the world as a great opera singer in the early Showa period.
